I bought my laptop online, and it came with windows pre-installed. Recently my laptop developed some viruses, so I completely erased my computer. I had a guy friend put windows (XP home) back on for me, but now when I log on, it says I only have 2-3 days left to activate windows. I'm unable to get ahold of this guy friend. I have an Acer laptop & the only windows installation disks I have are for my Dell desktop computer. Any ideas? I've contacted Microsoft & they were of course no help.

Just a quick note - my sticker # on the bottom is invalid.
I bought this laptop from overstocked.com.
As I said - the laptop came with NO disks!

Look on the underside of the laptop, there should be a sticker with the authorisation code stuck there.
IGNORE the "You're Screwed" brigade.
It doesn't matter what discs are used to install the software as long as the activation code is valid - I had to do mine from a new set of recovery discs the company sent me and it worked fine.
If the system is supplied without OFFICIAL MicroShaft discs, ie just the system recovery discs, they have to put an OFFICIAL sticker, with a valid activation, on the laptop in case of problems. (At least they do in the UK).
This means that if you have to send it away for repair, in my case several hard drive replacements, the same code is used for reactivation whenever the repairs are complete and the OS reinstalled.

That means it is an old version...I had that same problem it wont work on your computer. I tried to call that number. And it went through a machine and everything and it asked me for some code. And it couldnt even find that code. If you can afford a laptop then you need to go out and buy you a new version of Windows XP.

You need to contact Acer with all of your purchase information.
HP/Compaq does this, too. They sell you a computer with the OS pre-installed, but no recovery discs. This is one of the reasons I went with Dell this time.
The OS is supposed to be stored behind a permanent firewall and I know you can access it, but I can't recall how. Maybe hitting F3 as it's booting and choosing boot from hard drive? I sure hope someone else knows. Good luck!

Your friend should have installed YOUR COPY of Windows XP. Sorry, you are SCREWED. He could have activated Windows XP before he left, but he didn't. You are better off hiring a PRO.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

Your laptop should have included Windows discs. Have you looked for them? Otherwise you'll likely need to buy a Windows license soon and activate it.
