The reason you avoid soda while having braces is because of uneven staining of the teeth. The braces themselves aren't damaged by the soda, but there are spots on the teeth where the braces completely cover (where they're attached to the teeth themselves), and other parts that aren't. So when the braces come off, you end up with whiter spots where the braces used to attach, and darker areas around it.
Any activity that stains teeth will cause this effect. It's not just soda; it's also coffee, and yes, smoking.
If you are not meticulous about keeping your teeth clean while wearing braces, you could end up with spots where your braces used to be, which will make your teeth look funny. Eventually, the coloration difference will fade however, as the cleaner parts of the teeth are exposed to the same stuff. But it's slow.
So it's not any "extra unhealthy" (smoking is unhealthy, but braces+smoking isn't worse health-wise), but when the braces come off it will lead to obvious staining in the short (and potentially long) term - yellow teeth with white squares. Teeth whitening is expensive and a bit painful, too.

When I wore dental braces as a teenager, I smoked up to three packs of cigarettes a day. I noticed no trouble with the metal braces or the small rubber bands I had to use daily from smoking. You'll have to brush more often though. Get an electric toothbrush. They clean better around the nooks and crannies that metal braces have.

No. Braces are metal or ceramic. There not affected by much. Drinking pop doesn't ruin the braces, it attacks the glue used to hold the brackets on as well as your teeth and causes cavities, etc. Smoking can stain the little elastic ligatures used to hold the wire on the brackets and also stain your teeth. If I smoked I wouldn't worry about ruining my braces, I would worry about my lungs, my skin, etc.

just brush good once your braces come off use some nightly teeth whitener to even out the coloring if you do find you have little white spots where the braces were even if you didnt smoke, chances are you'll have these spots anyway.

You shouldn't be smoking anyway but it shouldn't have any effect on your braces if they're the metal brackets. If you have the clear ones, it could possibly stain them. I've never heard of it tho.

Actually people who smoke have nasty disgusting mouths , and since no one really wants to kiss a smoker anyway . . .
Why waste $$ on braces ? Someone who is lame enough to smoke is just wasting the $$ on an orthodontist . Skip they braces and buy a pet for company since only a loser will want to kiss anyway .

I smoked while I had braces...I had clear ones on top, and metal on the bottom...the clear ones stained, so they weren't very clear anymore, but the metal had no effect...
otherwise, it should be fine...

Smoking will put tar or nicotine stains on them over time just like it does your teeth, however, if they are going to be on for a short time, 4months, you might not notice them getting dirty, but they may pit the metal or plastic. (wear off the finish)
