i speak as an agnostic. christians and followers quote there holy books as evidence. atheists dont even offer any theory as to what caused the big bang they believe in. what real evidence does either offer as to whether there is or is not a god? im not saying they should need to prove anything but does this in itself prove there is an amont of faith required in either?

1. Atheism just means not believing in a god. Consequently, it is just a rejection of a belief system, and so does not have to explain anything else, it merely has to argue against theism.

2. In my experience it is religion (which appeals to hearts and minds) in which fanaticism is seen. The rejection of a cause, as is atheism, will rarely have the same level of fervour.

3. An honest atheist, as I consider myself to be, recognises that there is, as you say, "an amount of faith required". I don't know that I am right, any more than a Christian really does. None of us actually has knowledge, we merely have belief. That is why I never try to influence others - my set of beliefs works for me, but it may not work for anyone else. For the same reason, I never read about beliefs, because I do not wish to be swayed. My beliefs are entirely mine, if they match other people's beliefs, then that is purely coincidental.

4. British atheists prefer to be called secularists, by the way.

we do too offer theories as to the cause, m-theory suggests that the universe was created when two universes in the multiverse collided causing the Big Bang.
