Just wondering how much I can expect to get for claiming one child. I'm in Kansas and claim 0 on my taxes throughout the year. I believe I would fall under the lowest tax bracket.

A child on your return:

1. Reduces your taxable income by $3,300
2. May allow you to get a greater standard deduction as head of household of $7,550 versus $5,150 for a single filer
3. Gives you a credit against tax owed of up to $1,000
4. Gives you a refundable credit of up to $1,000 if you owe little or no tax
5. Gives you a refundable credit of up to $2,747 if your income falls within a certain range.

So if all conditions are most favorable, you could get a tax benefit of over $4,000 with a child on your return versus no child on your return.

If your child is living with you and you are providing over 50% of the household, you should file "Unmarried Head of Household". If you don't make over $30,000, you should qualify for some earned income credit and if you pay someone to care for your child you may qualify for a child care credit. There isn't an answer to your question without knowing how much you made, if the child is you dependent and how much federal income tax has been withheld. I think you should have a decent refund, maybe better than that depending on how much you've made in 2006.
