My beloved female chocolate lab is 15. Recently she has become resistant to getting up to go outside to so her business. I sometimes have to carry her. She is eating and drinking. I have had her since she was three years old and love her very much, but don't want her to suffer. I don't think she is in pain except for when she doesn't want to walk. Dog lovers and dog experts....what do you think?

Do you have a diagnosis? Your vet should be able to tell you if it's arthritis, which it probably is. A good pain reliever could really help add quality to life. Don't try to dose her yourself with human over the counter stuff; it can be dangerous.

You can also try to be sure she stays warm and has soft beds to lie on without having to jump up or climb stairs. Since she's a large dog, even little things like elevating her food/water dishes so she doesn't have to stoop will reduce strain on her achy joints.

Most importantly, keep in touch with your vet once you have an idea what's wrong. She's getting to the age where you need to keep up with her health in order to keep her from suffering unnecessarily. And I hate to say it, but be making plans and preparing yourself to say goodbye. It sounds like she's lived a long, happy life and is lucky to have had such a loving owner.

I wish they lived longer. Best wishes to you and your lab.

Talk to your vet and get her on a pain reliever / anti-inflamatory. I have a slightly overweight Parson Russell Terrier who is ten now and he acts 5 years younger now that he's on the meds - He actually runs for a ball again!

Does she like to lay by heaters/fireplaces - if she does, then she's in pain.

sounds like artheritus. you could try letting her sleep on a heating pad. it will help relieve some of the soreness. i would just let her live out the rest of her life. she sounds happy. unless shegets artheritus bad,
good luck!!!!!!!
