Karate is one family of martial arts, the Karatedo styles. There are other fighting styles in Japan as well. Some use weapons, like Naginata, Katana, Kama, Kusari-Fundo.

The karatedo type styles are very much openhand styles. Kara(empty) te(hand).

There are Many different styles that've come from both Japan and Okinawa, like Shotokan, Isshinryu, and Goju-Ryu just to name a few of the more well known disciplines.

But there are dozens more, Karate is just the General name that includes ALL the disciplines that come from Japan and Okinawa
