I wanted to name my dog "Bob." Is there anything I should avoid? What about syllables? Is it better to have 1 or more than 1? Do dogs recognize certain names more?

I think it depends on what type of dog it is and what effect you're looking for. For instance, naming a Pit Bull or a Rottie "Killer" might inadvertently cause a 'stigma' to an already stigmatized breed. I've heard that names ending in 'y' sounds, such as 'Skipp-y', 'And-y', 'Luc-y', are easier for a dog to recognize, but that's hearsay. I think Bob for a name would be fine. It's simple and to the point. I'd stay away from overly exotic names that have fifty syllables...besides, if you're getting a puppy, you'll soon find that calling that name out a hundred times a day gets old, and a long name only confuses a dog. Also, you might want to remember that you'll be using the name not only with just you and your dog, but in other places and in full hearing of other people. Make sure it's something you don't mind yelling out, in the middle of a crowd. :-)

Speck, because people may think it is spick, and that will definetly not be good. Also, you may want to avoid the over used names, like rover and spot, because chances are that someone else you know has named their dog that, and it will just confuse your dog when two people are calling it's name at once. You might want to keep the syllables short, like 1 or 2, so that it is easier to call it( think about it this way, do you want to yell Charlemagne every time to your dog?). If you really like a long name, you can always use that formally but call the dog by a short nickname. You might also want to avoid names that sound like "no", becuase that will just confuse the dog.

Bob is a good name for a dog. Keep the dog names simple so one syllable names for a dog is perfect. Also avoid the dog names that start with a "S". Too many commands start with "S". Sit, Stay, Shake etc...

Bob is cool, I had a dog named Bob. I currently have 3 dogs, Charlie, Poot & UGA. Charlie will also anwser to Chuck or Charles. I think anything more than 2 syllables would be tough to repeat all the time.

I've heard that dogs only recognise the first 2 (max 3) syllables in words. And Bob is an awesome name!

Dogs don't "understand" syllables.... it's the tone of the letters. Letter that have a sharp sound like beginning letters P, D, R, Z (as well as several others). Keeping it to 1-2 syllables is best.

Bob is a good name, try to avoided naming your dog something that rhyme with Sit or Stay. Cuz that might make you dog think kinda confusing, also keep you dog name something simple and short. Dont name your dog anything like long name & alwayz remember name your dog a name that describe him.

I personally don't care for common names. You're dog will learn its name whatever you decide. Something common that you use a lot in ordinary conversation could get pesky when your dog comes to you every time you say it.
You also need to consider what you want the neighbors to hear you yelling out the door. Do you really want to be screaming another mans name out your door at night? Or, yelling lightning in a thunderstorm? ( I made that mistake with Thunder.)
But one of the best things about your own pet is naming him. So bottom lined, whatever you think fits is best and no one Else's opinions matter. He's your companion.

a dogs name should be between 1 and 3 syllables. to find a bad name you think to yourself would i be embarassed to call my dog by this name in public. dogs dont nessesaraly recegnize names better but to get them to recognize their name you should call it and when it looks up at you give it a treat or love or something.

long names. i think dog names should be just one or two syllables. Don't also name the dog after a family member or close friend.
