It doesn't "expire" per se, but it does lose potency.

Some folks recommend replacing them every six months, but the spice companies say keep using them as long as they appear to have flavor--and trust you to be able to tell.

Shake the jar, let it settle and give a sniff. If there's essentially no smell, it should be tossed out.

I generally only keep spices for 6 months at the longest. Some spoil sooner and some will keep longer. At the restaurant we like to keep the spices as fresh as possible, so nothing past 3 months there!!

1. How long it keeps its potency depends on how it is stored and how good it was in the first place.

2. If it's old and isn't as potent, use more.

3. If you can't smell it, you won't be able to taste it, either. So toss it.

It loses it's stuff after a year, but it won't hurt you to use it. Just like most herbs, you should replace them once a year. However, how many of actually do that.

most spice jars have expiration dates.
but i keep my spices no longer than 6 months.
for spices you don't use daily,
it's best to buy them in small packages.

I usually donot use spices past two years.
