Far and away, the most popular and talked about front-projectors in the av enthusiast community are:

The Sony VPL-VW100 (aka "Ruby") and

The Sony VPL-VW50 (aka "Pearl").

Both are high "price performance ratio" devices that are affordable (relatively) and provide excellent resolution & performance.

I don't know the general price range of the Optoma to compare it to. These projectors are both based on a type of "liquid crystal on silicon" type of chip (LCoS) which is different from the DLP technology that is more common these days.

One reason the propularly is that they display the full HD resolution if 1920x1080, while most other projetors are somewhat lower.

Street price on the less expensive "Pearl" is around $4k.
