Is it a good idea to leave your radio and TV on in the house to deter burglars, while you are away?

Nah, you'll just have a big power bill. You can get those lamp timers that switch the light on for you in the evening and then off again later. Available at hardware and electronic stores. Have a neighbour collect your junkmail and keep an eye on the place. Have a record of all your belongings including photos and serial numbers and identifying marks on furniture or electronics. Better still, have a trusted family friend come and house sit for you.

Iron bars on the windows and doors. If we had had those, our house would not have been burglarized last summer. Most of the burglaries around here are done by teenagers looking for easy burglary jobs.

I have installed a heavy gate across the driveway now and motion detectors around the house to alert us if someone approaches the house after dark. So far, a fat possum that lives under the house has been triggering the alarm at the back of the house when it goes to the outside cat feeder to load up on Meow Mix.

You can also put up those plastic "YOU ARE BEING VIDEOTAPED" signs in your front yard, too.

simple: yes, this is a good idea. However, most burglars, besides drug addicts, will stake out at your house until they see you leave. Then they get in, get what they want, and get out. Both my neighbors just had a break in, one of them in clear daylight, the other while they were sleeping in the next room.

An easy way to improve things (I just did myself) is hook up your web cam with the free Windows XP powertoy named 'timershot'. It can post a snapshot of your house at a timed interval. Not only can you check on your house while you are e.g. at work, it will also make a nice mugshot of the burglar him/herself.

Other tips:
- Keep your doors and windows closed and locked
- have a dog
- hire a security agency that reacts to your alarm system, or
- just install an alarm system, or
- put an old webcam outside, so it looks like your 'secured', or
- just put up a fake sticker in sight saying 'secured by ...'
- go live next to someone who is not as well prepared or a lot richer, the burglar will make an easy choice
- take up self defense lessons so you won't be afraid to kick the burglars ***. Don't get a gun unless your are highly trained (e.g. like a police officer).

Lights are the number 1 home burglary deterrent. Also a home alarm system. If you can't afford the system, ask a friend or relative who has one to contact their company and get you some stickers for the doors and windows. Leave a light or to on when your not home, preferably on the second floor so the interior of the house can't be seen as easily. Also try to illuminate the dark areas out side your house.

You're better off asking your neighbours to look out for your house. Ask if someone can collect your mail, get movement-sensored lights so if someone does try something, they'll be in the light and deterred a bit. Make sure all your locks are decent ones not just cheap ones and you could always have timed inside lights that come on and turn off at certain times during the day/night so it looks like someone is home.
Have fun while your away :O)

Patriot Self Defense system succeeds for 2 main factors. The initial is that it make use of simple moves integrated from all the most effective battling styles available. The second is that the makers of this program didn't quit there, they took these moves right into the lab and ran all kind of clinical tests to amass as much data as feasible before setting to work to assess this data and created a scientific established protection system that rather truthfully reinvents the industry.

If you are going away, remember to take all phone books, memo books or anythig that has names and numbers in it, this is used as leads by a burgler for the next hit. They search out people by phone number, get address and hit them.
Get P.O. Box for mail, suspend newspaper delivery, put blender on a timer to go on for about 4 mins, three times a day.
Even tape a can opener down so it runs, them put on a timer too. Have things going on throughout the day, and have people seen going in and out of the place, if empty for long periods.

That's good. You can also buy a timer that turns your lights on and off a different times throughout the night. Also cancel your mail and newspaper subscriptions. The Post Office will hold your mail for you.
