I have an old FN FAL I'm trying to get rid of; it's beat up, and not really worth much (cheap clone). I'd like to just be rid of it (legally). Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bound's hubby here:

You have been given some sound advice, but it also sounds as if there are some potholes in the firearms knowledge.

First, you identify your rifle as an FN (Fabrique Nationale) FAL, then you say it is a cheap clone. The only difference here is the value of the rifle.

If this rifle was acquired prior to the Bush (Sr,) & Clinton "Assault Weapons bans", it would be more valuable to a collector or shooter because it did not have to be made less offensive looking. Beat up is not a bad thing, a rifle can be fixed up or refinished. Depending on the actual manufacturer, this rifle has a potential value of at least $300, and perhaps as much as $1000 or more. Also, the magazines alone could be worth anywhere from $20 to $50 each to a shooter. Bottom line, much of the advice given is taking money from your pocket, and probably giving it to someone underserving of it!

If you turn it in to the police or another government agency, chances are you will not get a cent, or maybe $50 in an "Amnesty Buy-Back program", but you will also be looked at as a person that may be a source or recipient of illegal guns.

If you sell it to a pawn shop (in states that allow this) you will be fleeced at the tune of a few cents on the dollar of true value.

Your best bet would be go to a reputable gun shop and see what they will do for you. They can at least give you a fair idea of value. If you have a Cabela's near you, they buy used guns for re-sale in their "Gun Libraries". Once you find a value you can live with, you can sell it to Cabela's or on-line at Gunbroker.com or similar (e-bay does not permit gun auctions, but you can sell parts, such as magazines).

Whatever you do, make sure you maintain a legal paper trail, since in many states your FAL is considered an "evil" assault rifle. Going through a licensed gun delear (not a pawn shop) will protect you from a future owners "evil-doing"!

Good luck!

check with the local police department. If you are in a larger city, they probably have a firearms unit that will take it from you and destroy it. If your local PD won't take it, most state police departments have a firearms unit. If the won't take it, call thr local ATF office.

Personally, I'd take it to the local pawn shop or gun store to try and get a few bucks for it. You can try to sell it online with gunbroker.com or gunsamerica.com (transactions must go thruogh an FFL if crossing state lines. FFL fees ans shipping can add up quick, so it may not be worth it).

Just a couple of ideas...

If you live near a big city like Chicago they will have periodic collections of "no questions asked" of fire arms. The best part is they will give you money or gift cards to major stores for the weapons. Call your police department or city hall they might have a date of the next round up.

Do not give it to the POLICE. They take it home or kill someone with it. There are no honest cops. Sell it or give it to a friend.
I promise that if you get involved with the police department, you will have alot of trouble .To a cop there are two kinds of people, Cops and Criminals. If you talk to a cop about this rifle you will be treated like a criminal.
