My daughter is 14, and still sucks her thumb. How do I make her stop? We tried the rake (retainer that is supose to hurt...NOT), it was a waste of $$$. Tried the nasty paint. Nothing works.

14 is kind of old for sucking her thumb. If she WANTS to stop, she is probably just slipping it in there while she sleeps and has little control over it. You can loosely wrap an ACE bandage around her elbow so that it will stay in place and tighten up if she bends her arm to put her thumb in her mouth. This will at least serve as a reminder to stop sucking her thumb.

Otherwise, I'd say she's reached the age where some kind of psychotherapy is worth considering if she is suckign her thumb during waking hours - if she wants to stop. There must be some sort of underlying reason for the desire to use this security crutch.

braces fix everything, and since she is sucking her thumb, she must not have very straight teeth...
