My mom's making snickerdoodle cookies right now and it calls for cream of tarter. We are out, can we use something else or just omit it? Will the cookies not work without it? Must we run to the store?

Thanks!

Yes - you can substitute lemon juice or vinegar (triple the amount of cream of tartar - for example, if the recipe calls for 1 tsp. cream of tartar, use 3 tsps. of either vinegar or lemon juice.)

There's really no recommended substitute. White vinegar or lemon juice in the ratio of 3 times the amount of cream of tartar called for will provide the right amount of acid, but will likely cause problems with your recipe.
