Age does not make the difference...stress does. Any time you take a cat/kitten to a new place it is scared and don't know what to expect. Some do alright when others can get so stressed that they can become ill.
The best way to bring a new cat/kitten home is to give it a safe place, preferrably a small room, that will have all the necessities that a feline will need. See how well it adapts to that space and then you can let the cat investigate the rest of it's new home.

He is probably old enough for you not to worry about his getting into trouble or ingesting something that might harm him as you would with a kitten.
It is very natural for any cat to be frightened and disoriented when it comes into a new environment so a small space that contains his food, water and litterbox is a good idea for as long as he seems to need it, especially if you are not home all day. You can introduce him to the rest of the house when you are home.
I do hope he is already neutered. If not, make plans for that this week and contain him until after he has had his surgery. At six months he is sexually mature and will mark his new territory by spraying if he is not fixed.
Go to: www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Base Camp - How to Prepare for Your New Cat". That will give you good tips on how to introduce him into your household.

Yes! It doesn't matter how old he is or if you have any pets!!!! I just got a new cat and i got a book about kittens. It says doesn't matter how old but you need to have a safe room for your cat. even if there are no other pets in the house. The point of the safe room is so that if the cat feels scared or threatend him/her can run to his/her safe room to be safe. It is like us feeling scared so we can run to our rooms, or a place where we feel safe. So yea you NEED to create a safe room!!!

Cats adapt to what ever you give them, most sleep sixteen hours a day. Just give him love, food, water, kitty condo, cat scratching post is a must!! You and your new friend will be just fine, best of luck to the two of you. I've had cats all my life, more than 30 years. This is the first time I've heard of is a safe room, are there other cats to be concerned with?? Dogs, or what ever???

I'd say bring him home and see how he does without one and if things don't work out then make a safe room. All cats/kittens are different.

Depends on his personality, if he's shy or scared of new situations. Usually a kitty will find his own "safe place" (such as under the bed) to hide out for a while until he feels more comfortable. If you have other pets that you feel might stress the newcomer, you could keep him in one room until he is ready to meet the rest of the family.
