Know of any relatively unknown, often better than popular mp3-type audio formats?

The general public appears to be quite shortsighted about the alternatives to mp3. Few people know of formats like BONK and some don't even know fairly established ones like OGG (which is often better quality than AAC AKA MP4).

Besides the more obvious ones, WMA, MP3Pro, AAC, AAC-Plus/HE, OGG (all of these are based on perceptual hearing curves) and larger lossless ones like FLAC and WAVPACK (which use basic linear prediction and integer compression methods)

...there are several other open-source formats on sites like Sourceforge.net like DOT100 (which makes files smaller by away the least harmonic/worst sounding frequencies) and BONK and GSM (which predict the next time sample by more advanced prediction method)..

Have any of you had experience with alternative mp3-type formats like BONK, DOT100, and GSM and, if so,what do you like and dislike about them?

Note: please do not give any responses about mp3, wma, or ATRAC (well known commercial audio types), the point of this question is to NOT talk about those audio types (which are already over-documented) but only less known ones.

Not to sound too proud but, as a sound engineer, musician, and programmer, I already know a lot about DSP and audio formats. So stating obvious facts about well-known formats will only get you thumbs down from me for wasting my time (and that of other advanced audio technologists looking the question/answers over) and being off-topic.



For an example of an on-topic answer you may say something like
"BONK gives better results on noisy songs (like alt rock) because the resolution errors it create are remarkably similar to the noise in music (such as that in cymbals), on the other hand it does not work with popular devices IE portable audio players yet", because the main subject is BONK not mp3.

Introducing new format info is another good idea.
