It's friendly banter. I had a friend of mine who tells about being in the jungles in Vietnam for like a month, no bath, dirty smelly, stinking of high heaven, eating rations, then coming back to base where the air force were nice and clean in their civvies, grilling a streak. The Air Force does not have soldiers. What can I say. If I had wanted to be a soldier and live in the mud I would have joined something other than the Air Force. It's no lie, the Air Force comparatively speaking is "A great way of life".

It goes to just post WWII when the Army Air Corps was split off into its own service. It took a lot of the more innovative thinkers of the military and the traditionalists stayed with Army. This did a number of things one is it left a management void in Army they have been years overcoming. But the AF has not done a good PR with Army either. While with the Army Air Corps the groun pounders felt that the flyboys got too much credit for too little work. I think that the present situtation in the middle east is resolving some of that with the front line troops, but remember for the Army and Marines the "cannon fodder" are enlisted people, while the Navy and AF cannon fodder are officers

I don't remember any hostility between the two services. I was in the Army and was stationed close to airbases. We enlisted guys got along very well with enlisted Air Force dudes. At one base, Army and Air Force shared the same mess hall, PX and NCO clubs. We even pulled KP together. The Air Force did have slightly better conditions, though, but we didn't mind. Actually, we were very jealous of their blue uniforms - no that's not true, most of the time we all wore the same style fatigues.

Since I have lived both...raised in the AF and now married to a Army man. I can tell you one of the reason's is that when someone from the AF comes to an Army post and see how we live vs. how they live they think they are better. Did you know that is someone in AF gets stationed on an Army installation they get extra pay because the Army's standards of living are lower then theirs.

Think you get a lot of crap. I joined the Coast Guard and get it from all the branches. Then to top that my husband is in the navy. We live in army housing. I don't get it either we all fight for the same reasons. We all put our life on the line for our country. Sorry to hear about that. But I totally understand what you are going though.

I was an Air Force E-Tac embedded in an Army unit (bluesuiter) in Vietnam, and while I never miss an opportunity for a little jab, it is all in fun. They covered my @$$ way to many times for me not to hold them in the highest regard.

It's just a stupid macho thing. I saw it when I was in the Army in Korea 1977-79.
Maybe we were jealous because the AF got better ammenities and such.
Rusty, above is right.
