People tell me that I shouldn't be running while working out, because I'll lose the calories and won't gain any muscle mass.

I don't have much muscle mass, and I'm very lanky/skinny.
I have been working out lately to gain more muscle mass, but I also want to stay in peak running shape. I know i need my protein for maximum protein synthesis after working out, but I feel that the protein isn't an adequate fuel for running.

Any help/suggestions would be great.

They are dumb if they think calories build muscle. Complete proteins (like whey) and pushing your muscles beyond their current capacity build muscle, not calories.

Carbs are good for running. I have found that I can't build muscle and lose weight (I am not skinny like you) at the same time. Gaining serious muscle mass and staying in running shape- it's almost like having two jobs at once.

You can't foget the carbs. I run long distances also. Actually have the 1/2 marathon this saturday at Disney and the full marathon on sunday.
You need more than protein. Whole grain food will do the trick. There are plenty of online articles that you can refer to.

Good luck and keep running

Athletes take in alot of carbs especially runners, body builders take in alot of protein. You can try doing weights if you're looking to gain muscle. Either way a balance of everything should be okay.

You should take in a lot of calories. Probably 3000 if you run a lot.
