Yes, if its in the center of the chest it is probably anxiety, as the heart actually lies to the left of center. Anxiety can be powerful, and for some reason tends to make people short of breath and tight in the middle of the chest.
See the doc to rule out an aneurism, which is an enlargement and out-pouching of the arteries, particularly the aorta, as this would be a serious condition that would need to be treated right away. But based on what you have told us, esp. since it flares up at night, suggests strongly that it is anxiety.

It could be anxiety, because with anxiety your chest does tighten up and it almost feels like a heart attack. It could also be pleuritis which is irritation of the lung walls and it feels like a sharp pain and when you breath it feels worse, but this usually lets up in a few minutes and it could happen several times throughout the day, but if this is an ongoing pain I would go and see a doctor.

Sometimes I get that too.I don't know if it's the same, but the best I can describe it would be a "rib cramp". It's a sharp pain that feels like a poke in the ribs or even a sort fo cracked rib,but not that bad cause I've had that too. The only remedy I have is to take deep breaths(5 or 6) untilit clears. If it's ongoing you might be ahead to go and get it checked out again.

You said that you do have anxiety . . . that is what is causing the chest pain dear one.
Anxiety, stress, heartache tenses up the muscles. The brain...headache. Back...backache. Heart muscle...heartache...or chest pain as you described.
It can feel as if a hand is squeezing your heart and the pain is great.
Cure ? Anxiety medicine prescribed by a doctor to help you through this time till the anxiety experience has passed. Meditation. Time with those who care to help you through this period. A good nights sleep. Being good to yourself when you can such as an outing to a fav. place, restaurant, watching a video, walk, fav. dish of ice cream etc.
The pain is from anxiety.
Heart hugs to you.

I used to get that from Muscle spazms. I also have anxiety and I also have gone to the ER due to chest pains/ shortness of breathe, They told me the same.
But for the spazms, I told my Dr about them. I use the phone a lot at work, and my spine isn't straight, so with the strain on my neck and my spine, it made my muscles spazm. I got a headset for using the phone at work, and those pains went away.
I strongely suggest you see a Dr though. Better to be safe than sorry.
Good luck.

there is a bone in the middle of your chest called your sternum
and if it is brused or broke you will have chest pains and a very hard time breathing exspecially when you lay down to sleep but if that is the case the doctor really cant do anything for that but still go check with your doctor. hope you feel better.

It could be chest wall pain. I had that problem a couple years ago. My chest wall became inflamed. Try taking a couple of advil and see if that helps. If not get a second opinion, especially if they did not take any chest x-rays. Chest pain is not something to fool around with

Its probably just one of those anxiety things. Does it feel like a huge bubble is in your chest? Cause it it does, those are normal, people get them all the time. I forgot what its called, but its quite common.

I have had a similar type of pain in my chest, I found it to be a stitch. It really frightened me one night when I was driving home, I thought I was having a heart attack. I have had them since but realise it is nothing more than a stitch.
