in science physics there is a thing called joules. a joule is a meausre of amount of work......or something like that. the equation for joules or work is work joules(W)- equals force(f) times distance(D) or w=fd. WORK IS FORCE TIMES THE DISTANCE MOVED IN THE DIRECTION OF FORCE.
so screws make the work easier by increasing the distance over which the force is applied. but in the long run you do the exact same amount of work by having to move the force the extra distance

work is a function of force and distance. a screw is a modified simple tool, the inclined plane. take a sheet of paper and cut it in half the long way from one corner to the other. now take a paper towel tube, line up the small corner of the paper with the bottom of the tube, and wrap the paper around the tube. it looks like a screw! unroll it now, and measure the angle of the small corner.
work = force x 13in x cos(37)
your distance is the hypotenous, about 13in.
compare that to a nail, when your distance is the lenth of the nail. the distance may be less, but when you consider that (a) cos(37) is less than one and (b) the total amount of work must be the same for both because the same vertical distance is traveled, that the amount of force required to use the screw is far less than that of the nail.

The screw is a ramp wound around a shaft. This allows a smaller amount of force moved over a greater distance to translate to a larger amount of force moved over a smaller distance.
