I am wondering the proper way to state that the birthday is a surprise. I don't want to put Shh... it's a surprise. Would you write:

Mrs. Jane Doe requests the pleasure of your company at a surprise party in honor of Mrs. Jane Smith's birthday.

I am going for formal, so the wording has to be right, but I'm not sure how is should be. Thanks!

unbeknownst to Mrs. Jane smith, A party is being held in honor of her ??th birthday. Mrs. Jane Doe requests the pleasure of your company at this celebration on the 29th of feburary, year 2007.
Sorry about the spelling, but that is how i would write it, i would just use spell check first, which i don't have.

Usually Suprise parties are not formal, as how do you get the guest of honor dressed formally?
I would word the invitations something like this,

Mrs. Jane Doe requests the honor of your presents at the surprise celebration of the birth of Mrs. Jane Smith on the 4th of February at 4pm please RSVP at mrsjanedoe.com
Thank-you

sometimes people are so ignorant you need to write "shh...its a surprise!" otherwise they think the person is already informed and it backfires. its just best to stick to the shh... way.
