Dogs are pack animals and the pack leader is leaving them alone. And some dogs have anxiety because of abuse or neglect in the past.

A dog does not know that the owner is going to return. When the owner leaves as far as the dog is concerned the owner is not coming back. They can't remember that the day before the owner came back in 2 hours or 3 hours. They associate leaving as something permanent. They want to go with the owner so they can assure that they are not abandoned.

Usually that is the sign of an anxious dog. Yes, they are pack animals so they don't like being left alone. There are some things you can do to help this. One, they will learn you always come back. Make sure not to leave them totally alone for more than 5 hours at a time. And most important, when you come home, don't make a big deal of it. When dogs get overly excited when you come home, its fun for you because they show love but in dog psychology it means they are anxious.

Its called seperation anxiety. They believe you are never coming back! They think once you walk out that door, that your gone! no matter how many times you go out and come back!
Try to work on it now, cause it could easily progress to worse, some dogs will actually tear apart the house or scratch the door and just be overall destructive until the owner comes bacK!

They hate to be alone.

Because their pack leader has left and he/she is trying to make contact with you.
All of my dogs howl when I leave and again when they hear my car pull back in the driveway.

my dog did that one time when we move from one state to another we had to send her by plane . my aunt picked her up and took her home . my doggie was really sad b/c she thought she had new when she didn't. when went to go pick her up she was so happy to see us!
the reason of the story is b/c the love you so much it hurts them when you them!

because they feel lonely. they think they have been deserted but dont worry they settle down after about 5 minutes.

because they are worried that you are leaving them at home alone and probably they're also somewhat afraid that you may not come back.
