I know that stereo headphones work with it, but do surround sound headphones like 5.1 surround sound headphones? If not, what do I need to make them work? Help is much appreciated as I don't know what to buy?

The answer to your question is both yes and no. Yes they will work but most surround sound headphones require a digital input to get the real 5.1, and if yours do then the answer to your question is no (in a sense because they will not deliver 5.1 without the digital input which the laptop does not offer). If your headphones do require a digital input you can go to any computer store and purchase an add on audio card for your laptop that has a digital output, there are a few different types - USB and PC Card type. The USB type will be the most universal and will connect to any computer with a USB jack so it is also more versatile. The PC Card type will slide into the side of your computer to the PCMCIA slot (not all laptops are as universal on this though). The purpose of these cards is to enchance the sound from the computer primarily to go to larger surround systems, but in your case will have the output necessary to deliver the 5.1 surround sound you are looking for from your Surround Sound Headphones. Here's a link to a few. I have used both, and don't really prefer one over the other, though the creative piece offers quite a bit more flexibility.

Currently I am using the Creative piece for my laptop because I do surround sound training and at times need 5.1 and 7.1 audio for power point for which it has worked amazingly.

I hope this helped.

I have an HP Pavillion laptop and my husband has high end headphones with surround sound...these things are truly awesome! I've scared the crap out of myself a few times when I've played a game where the voices can come from anywhere...very cool.

Thus, to answer your q...yes surround sound headphones should work on your system...I have the XP Media OS and have had no problem using the headphones at all.

Good luck

i might examine the gadget supervisor to make useful your sound card is functioning good. An exclamation mark or crimson x might point out that the there's a topic with the sound card. i might additionally attempt uninstalling and reinstalling the sound card, and in step with threat updating it, it is, if there is an replace obtainable.
