Delsym for cough and colds is economical and has few side effects (12 years and up). It treats the cough and lacks other medication additives you may not need (such as decongestant or antihistamine). Make sure to drink plenty of liquids and rest is so imortant. If your cough is in your chest and sounds juicy (pardon the expression), try Mucinex (recent OTC from prescription). It breaks up congestion and allows affected people to cough it up and out, relieving cough. Eucalyptus may symptomatically help either by breathing it in or having a lozenge. Herbal tea (no caffeine) wit honey and lemon (honey soothes the throat and lemon acts as an astringent).

The BEST is Robitussin with Codeine. It actually is OTC but most large chain pharmacies such as Walgreens and CVS do not sell it without a prescription. Try and independent pharmacy to buy it at (most require photo ID and proof that you are over 18). The codeine increases the cough reflex threshold and decreases the sensitivity to irritants.
Other options are a large step down. Combine Mucinex DM with an antithetic such as Chloraseptic or Halls. Also drinking or gargling with a warm, salty liquid will help if swelling is present.

Bad news, most cough remedies don't work. The active ingredients would have to be delivered at such a high dose to be therapeutic (especially expectorants such as guaiphenesin) that they would cause nausea and vomiting as side effects. I always recommend steam to my patients but they like the idea of spending their hard earned money on a bottle of rubbish! Good nutrition, plenty of rest and fluids. Steam if you need to bring sputum up, honey and lemon to soothe.

The best antitussives (cough relievers) are codeine, which is a narcotic and not sold OTC, and dextromethorphan, which is non-narcotic, non-analgesic (doesn't relieve pain) and non-sedating (won't make you sleepy) antitussive.
So, look for OTC medications with dextromethorphan and the right amount of other compounds to relieve the remainder of your symptoms.
Good Luck!

I've always had success with Vick's VapoRub (found in most supermarkets and relatively cheap) Either that or you could go to a store that sells natural medicines (herbs, plant oils etc.) and look for some camphor oil or menthol. (The active ingredients in VapoRub)

I've heard Buckley's is the best. It's truly horrid stuff, though.
Beware of cough meds. I've heard horror stories about them masking signs of pneumonia, and it being hard to recover from.

Dextromethorphan. Buy one with a sedating antihistamine if you want to sleep. (Blablah PM) Buy one with a nonsedating antihistamine or without any antihistasmine if you're driving or operating heavy machinery (LOL).
