Sprocket refers to the gear on the wheel - Chainring refers to the gear that pulls the chain with the crank and pedal. A group of Sprockets makes up a Freewheel or Cassette depending on the hub.

Generally, you call the gears near the pedals chainrings and the gears on your rear wheel the cassette.

the gears themselves are called chainrings. there are usually 3 of them. together with the spider, bolts, and crank arms, they are called the crank assembly, or simply "cranks"
