It depends on how much fat is overlying the muscles. You could crunch till u drop and not see a thing if there is too much fat in the way. U need to do something besides crunches for that.

If you have very little belly fat, u could probably see results in 3-4 weeks, but do something besides just crunches. They are so overrated!
Here's a couple good variations:

As you come up, reach your right elbow toward your left knee. Alternate sides. The twisting motion works your obliques, which run down the side of your abs (love handles)

Also try reverse crunches, where you crunch your lower body with your feet off the ground and knees bent. Leave your shoulders on the floor. You can add a twist with these too. These are really good for lower abs.

Do regular and reverse crunches at the same time after you build up a bit, bringing your knees in toward your chest and crunching up with your shoulders.

Sticking to one exercise only works one set of muscles, you have lots of muscles in your abs area, and need to work them all. Strengthening your back will also help keep abs tight because thats where your support is. A weak back = protruding abs.
