America is not a country. It is a continent composed of many different countries. In each country people should speak the language or languages that they want.
Most common languages spoken in America are Spanish, english, Portuguese, French, and many native languages

The Native American culture was the first culture and civilization on this continent, but indeed, many people believe there were a people that existed before even them.
However, since they were first before America became established, they're culture itself was not a part of the establishment, in a legal government sense, of the United States of America as pertains to it's a governing bodies.
At the very beginning, there really was no one governing with the exception of George Washington, and he definitely spoke English.
Even today, the Spanish are in the majority, but the English language is still the Major language in our country.
And the accepted one that the U.S. government uses and no other, generally speaking, except for the occasional interpretor I suppose.
Therefore, the American people can accomodate people of other languages by becoming bi-lingual in the work place.
But in the end, if you want to get anywhere, it is still best to learn the English language.
And we only ever hear of people becoming bi-lingual. Meaning English and Spanish cause' they are the two major populations.
Then, what would you want the Chinese, Japanese, etc. to do, learn them both?
It's better we all learn just one, English, cause' we have got to have uniformity to stay powerful and united.
Just like the states don't have each they're own currentcy. We would have a mess.

Because it wasn't the natives who created the laws that Americans live by today and it wasn't the natives who developed the land to the point that made all the other immigrants from around the world want to leave their homes and move to the land of opportunity. Therefore, the language spoken in America SHOULD be American English. I myself am the product of a European immigrant family and i still believe that we should maintain culture and native languages but i strongly believe that the only way to unite under our countries whether they be Canada OR the USA is to come to an agreement that the one common thing among all of us is the ability and desire to communicate using the English language.
If you have no desire to learn the language, no longer is it a desire to keep your old roots but it becomes a problem of ignorance and disrespect for the country you've chosen to call home. Its already a plus that everyone is allowed to believe in whatever religion they want or to not believe at all, we need at least ONE common denominator among us.

It would be so much easier for everyone if we used one language because when your standing in line at the DMV and everyone is having to fill out forms and such that are written in twenty other languages it is costing us time and money. I came from a bilingual home and we learned and spoke English everywhere but at home. It just makes sense to adopt the language if you are adopting the country as your home. In the privacy of your home is where your culture and traditions should be used, but out on the streets of America we are Americans, one huge melting pot living under same conditions.

"Cultural Arrogance", again. The USA is part of 'North America', which is part of 'the Americas'. [Diplomats are always trained - outside the USA, anyway - to speak of the "US Ambassador" - not the "American Ambassador". All the millions of other residents of both continents and Central America get a bit upset being relegated to 'non-existence'!]
Maybe, as "the melting pot of nations", the USA could become a world leader and introduce Esperanto?
You don't speak "English" - or spell it, anyway!!
But, English - with "MicroSoft's SpellCheck spelling" - is becoming the World Language. Maybe just stick with it.

American. English was the language voted on by the people who consciously started this country.
Why not be like most other countries and speak multiple languages. It makes the most sense to me to speak whatever is spoken in the area where I live.

Most Americans today speak American English. If I were to move to a country that spoke mostly German, I would learn German. These are non-racist comments...They are facts, one is true and indisputable, the other is personal. Take whatever you want from my answer.

I don't believe anyone should forget their roots or forget there native language, but Americans should not have to learn a dozen different languages, we were born here, they choose to come here.

if i were to move to france, i would be expected to conform to french culture and tradition.
same application here. we speak english here and have for a LONG time. this is nothing new. i don't think legislating this was ever thought necessary. people have always learned english without whining.
do you have any idea what it would do econimcally if we were to allow 40 different languages to be spoke daily????
