A rod usually used to hold two other pieces of wood together

You might want to look at a wooden chair that has usually 2 or 4 dowels keeping the legs together... they are wooden poles, can be sculpted or not, and were originally intended to hold things together by placing each end in a hole on something else.

Hope this helps!
