Go to the volcano -- the lava has been flowing since 1983 and it's really incredible to walk right out to it and see it right in front of you!
Punalu'u Black Sand beach is amazing too. Lots of turtles.
Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (otherwise known as the Place of Refuge) - historical and interesting. Very pretty place for sunset.
Akaka Falls, Rainbow Falls - on Hilo side.
Mauna Kea and/or Hapuna Beach - awesome beaches! Very clean and the water is gorgeous.
Ahalanui hot springs - also on Hilo side of the island. Really, really neat place! Heated by underground lava tubes.
Pacific Tsunami Museum - in Hilo. Really interesting and informative.
Have fun!

Hawaii may be the 50th state of the United States of America and is situated almost at the center of the North Pacific Ocean issue that makes from Hawaii an excellent selection for a fantastic holiday, with hotelbye you'll discover more. The normal elegance of the hawaiian islands remains one of Hawaii's best assets. One of the very most fascinating areas to go to in Hawaii is Volcanoes National Park. This bunch provides a special, up close search at a dynamic volcano and the new landscape created by a volcano. Hot lava moves down the mountain area, and dry lava covers the road, featuring its unstoppable force. Another place worth visit is the memorial Visitors Center, a center that provides famous informative data on the Harbor and the Japanese attack and the Battleship USS Missouri.

When you go to the volcano the tickets you buy last for 7 days so getting thru the park in one day is unlikely. If you stay on the Kona side take the northern way to the volcano because that is about 90 miles one way. Going South is about 120 miles and very windy.
Horseback riding in Waipio valley is beautiful and I haven't been on a horse in years.
Checking out the waterfalls and tsunami museum on the hilo side are good too.
Checking out the Mauna Loa macadamian nuts on the Hilo side is interesting but DONT buy anything there. You can get them cheap at Walmart.
Taking a whale watching cruise is quite good too.
Taking a tour of stargazing on top of Mauna Kea. It is not cheap but you see stars in the sky like you never have before. You get to about 13000 feet elevation. Check out the Parker Ranch they used to have a restaurant but I am not sure it is still open. There are many good restaurants too on the Kona side.

Make sure you go to the Volcanoes especially near sunset. Its an amazing view. helicopter Ride from Hilo is 1/2 the price from Kona. Also if you like hiking and rain forests you can go hike near AKAKA and kapoala falls. They are amazing. Check for more information on web. Also the Luau Dinner is good. Parasailing is available but be sure to book it ahead. Also if you are in Kona, there is a Farmers market, where you can buy and drink coconut water and fresh local exotic fruits etc., Kona has lots of good places to eat.
There are lot of Time share persons in place. If you do not want to spend time visiting resort just say no to them. They have several booths in Kona with misleading names like Visitor center, Volcano Update to get people visit the booth.

I just got back from the Big Island. I strongly suggest you go to the Waikoloa Village Resort in Kona it is AMAZING. Also we drove right through the island to Hilo. That is a beautiful Drive, you go through many climates. Stop and get some chicken. They BBQ chicken the Hawaiin way on the side of the road at some stops, it is wonderful! I also enjoyed the private beaches on the west side of Kona.
I ALSO STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GO TO THE VOLCANO LOOK OUT AT NIGHT OR EVEN BETTER THE HELICOPTER TOUR>>IT IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!

i dont live in the big island, i live in oahu but heres a tip. if u visit the volcanos, please do not take a rock back home with you as a souvenir! legend says that theres a fire goddess named pele and i've heard people tell stories about how they have been cursed after they stole a rock. they actually had to fly back to hawaii and place the rock in the same exact location. so dont do that :)

I have to agree with taraloha. She hit all my favorite places.
Waimea (Kamuela) to the north is a great little cowboy town. Parker Ranch tours are interesting. It's the biggest cattle ranch in the US.
From there toward Hilo is pretty and jungly. You can stop at Akaka Falls park and walk a short loop trail to look at two great waterfalls. One of them looks like the one in the opening scene of Jurrasic Park.
This is my favorite of the Hawaiian Islands for its natural beauty, uncrowed feel and very, very nice people who enjoy sharing their culture and history.

I went to Honolulu about 4 years ago and got talked into surfing lessons. I really didn't think I was going to enjoy it but it was so much fun! They take your picture while you're in the water too. The waves they take you to aren't that big, so it's not so scarey. Also, I went to a Luah and that was really nice. There were dancers, you got a canoe ride, and a lot of other things...

Most of Hawaii is about warm beaches and warm water although on the big island is THE volcano (active) . . . see it ! then go chill on the beaches (much cleaner than California and much better water)
