i wanted to hook up a home stereo but, idk how to do it with a non stereo tv? do i hook it up threw the vcr? or the cable box?

You can usually hook up to either. If you have a stereo VCR, then hook it up through your VCR. Some cable boxes have audio in, but the audio may only work with with your Cable TV. Where as, if you hook it up through your VCR, the audio will work for both cable TV and movies(just make sure your VCR is on when your watching normal TV).

what are you connecting? cable box? sat receiver? dvd player? if its something like that, take the audio out from the device straight to the stereo. or are you wanting to connect the tv to the stereo and you only receive local channels? dont know about that....most tv's dont have an audio output.

That's up to you. If you get a stereo signal, you can still play stereo through your stereo system before it goes to the television. Your television just won't have sound. If your original signal does not have stereo, then you won't get stereo from your stereo system anyway. I hooked mine up to the rf converter that goes from the DVD player to the television.
