what does it mean when a vcr says SAFE....where the time is normally?

the vcr locked up and it wont even turn on!......it was working fine until i tried to program the vcr on a new universal remote and thats when the whole safe thing started......we dont have the manual for the vcr.....does anyone know what SAFE means when talking about vcrs? is the vcr ruined?

and get blueray

vcr's obsolete.
vcr's cheap.
