no dye will bring black lighter, you have to use bleach or strip your hair if you are not natural black, neither being good for your hair but if you're not a natural black and you want to get it lighter than use a stripping kit [you can get them at any hair boutique] and then you must wait AT LEAST 2 weeks before using ANY other dye to make it lighter. the longer you can hold out the better.
If you're using box dye DO NOT use FERIA, they use metallic crystals to make your hair shinier and brighter but really it ruins your hair forever, if you use FERIA you can't use any other brand without ruining your hair and it could lead to breakage.

Once you go black it's hard to go back, or so they say. But my hair is naturally dark brown and I also find it difficult to achieve the lighter shades of brown as seen on the box.

There are two options, one is to go to the salon and have them fix this with a sulfur-like product that lifts the black from your hair. The bad news is this stuff smells like rotten eggs when it's on, the good news, you'll only ever have to do this once.

You're second option is to use a hair dye in a box that will specifically lift dark hair. Loreal's Feria products contain a few shades that will achieve this but only in shades of Brown (Downtown Brown B61, Brownstone B53, and Underground Brown B51) or Red (Flaming Red R75, Ruby Rush R68, and Blowout Burgundy R37).

One word of warning though, if you already dyed your hair you need to wait awhile to re-dye it. Read the box carfully for instructions.

As the experts have said, It cannot be done with dye without bleaching it first. The most natural-looking bleach is the sun, but that is bad for the skin.
Only one step method would be paint, which I think would really look unnatural.
Of course, there are wigs. A good natural-looking one is expensive.

no I do not believe this is possible, you cannot simply go from black to red, or to blonde (for example)
in order to achieve a lighter colour, the black in your hair has to be "stripped" and then dyed a different colour over this but it will eventually cause some breakage/brassiness....
