Is it true that this will slow my computer down ?

Pictures are graphic intensive and they can take up a lot of space. It's not that it isn't good for the computer, but eventually it will slow it down because of the disk space used. Does your computer have a CD burner? If so, put the pictures on a CD and they can safely be stored for years. Or have your daughter help you with this.

Saying it's "not good" and that it'll slow the computer down probably isn't right. So long as you have reserved an adequate amount of disk space for 'paging' out the memory (this normally happens automatically in Windows), then there should be no problem in storing pictures or any other kinds of files on the computer. That's why they make these large hard disks on computers.
You can get in trouble by not clearing out your Outbox in some e-mail programs, but not by storing files on the disk.

Depending on how much memory you are using. You can always burn the pictures to a disk to save room on your PC and to safe guard the pics in case your PC ever crashed.
