My aunt's 2-year-old Dachshund isn't feeling well. He's been lying around the house doing nothing (normally he's running around and playing with my cousins). My cousins have to carry him outside so he can go to the bathroom. He won't eat or drink water. My aunt and uncle took him to the vet, but the vet doesn't know what's wrong. He doesn't have a fever.

Just the other day my cousin Laura found a huge tick in his ear. My aunt called the vet who said the tick wasn't the problem. They've been giving him water via an eyedropper and some food, but he's still not feeling well.

Does anyone know what could be wrong, or has had the same experience with your dog? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

jungles_fury: don't worry, the tick was removed.

My aunt is going to call the vet tomorrow and bring him in if he's still sick.

Is the dog able to eat and drink? Is the dog able to defecate? If an animal swallows something that it is unable to digest (bones, a stick, corn cobs, plastic, a ball, etc.) this may cause an intestinal blockage. The animal may then become listless and sick, and refuse to eat or drink, and it may have problems going to the bathroom. An xray of the digestive tract can determine if this is the problem. Good luck. I hope that your pet is better soon.

OK if the vet just looked at him and took his temperature only your aunt needs to find a new vet. The Vet should have taken blood work, taken x-rays, and maybe should have taken him in and given him IV fluids just to get him hydrated since you are saying they have to make him drink water through an eyedropper. Your aunt's dog can have a number of things wrong with him: he can have a virus that's been going around, if you live around a wooded area where there's a lot of wildlife like raccoons or opossum your aunt's dog could have lepto, or maybe he hurt his back while playing around with your cousins. So what your aunt should do if she still feels concerned is bring him to another vet or go to an animal emergency hospital where they'll run tests and give him meds to try to make him feel better.

I hope you removed the tick. Although rare some can cause paralysis or neurological signs. (I've only seen 1 case in all my years as a vet tech but it is possible). Did your vet run any bloodwork? Because that's one of the first things I would want to do if it was my dog. I wouldn't give any type of otc medication or tick stuff on him, you should never apply it to an animal who is ill.
I would get a second opinion from another vet.
In the meantime keep him comfortable. Pedialyte (like you give sick children) is great to keep them hydrated if he will drink it. And tempt him with food, try boiled chicken or hamburger and boiled rice or potatoes (this is easily digested and easy on the stomach for sick animals).
good luck

Take it to an emergency vet or call another vet ASAP. The dog is in serous need of help and probably needs to be on IV fluids until it can eat and drink on its own. It very well could be Lyme disease , Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, or Erlichia (sp) which are all tick borne diseases. Whatever it is the dog sounds like its in bad shape. Did it get any table scraps over the holiday. That could make thier stomach upset but really you need to take him in to a different vet. Good luck and I hope he is ok

I would find a new vet!
He sounds extremely ill, and how could the vet possibly miss a huge tick. You don't mention if he is vomiting or if he has diarrhea.
Don't waste any time get this dog to another vet as soon as possible!

My 11 year old border collie had something like that 2 years ago. She couldn't walk well, and got tired SO quickly. We took her to the vet 11 days later. Turns out she had lymes disese. She died 3 days later.

Contact your vet right away. And have a lymes disese test taken. Don't have her exercise that much, she needs to save her energy.

BEST OF LUCK!

(TAKE TO A VET NOW!!!)
