Explain to her that every living thing has a lifetime. Cut flowers only live for a few days, many fish live a short time, dogs live several years, birds live only a few years, but people live a long long time. Tell her that when these living things die, they can never live again. Remind her of plants or flowers that you have had that have died. Depending on your beliefs, you may tell her something like “Your bird is in heaven helping all of the baby birds.’

Empathize with her about her loss. "I know it is really hard for you. I can tell that you're very sad about this. You must miss your bird so much." Let her grieve. You can even bury the pet and have her make a tombstone.

There are many good children's books that talk about death. Lifetimes-Bryan Mellanie, I Miss You-Pat Thomas, I’ll Always Love You-Hans Wihelm are some of my favorites. They are great books that help young children understand about loss and grieving. You can find them on Amazon or your local book store or library.

Losing anything you love at that age is really difficult. I'd tell her the her bird has gone to a better place and that it has left this Earth. I'd buy her, not another bird, but a new pet that can give her more love than her bird before did. Being heartbroken is really hard, but it's really a learning experience. It happens to everybody and is just a part of growing up.
Happy 2007.

You need to have a funeral and burry the bird. That way she will know where the bird is. And when she wants to know where the bird is you can show her and explain that the birds body is there and the bird is... fill in your beliefs here.

You just explain to her that the bird died and when something dies we can think about it and remember it all we want but that we wont get to see/hold it again. Good luck
