around twelve. seven is defiantly early. if he wasn't doing it in his room you should have a talk with him, otherwise knock before you come in now.

There really is no typical age. The first time is usually by accident. But, once it happens, it will continue to happen for the rest of his life.
I wouldn't be too concerned. But, now would be a good time to start knocking before entering the room.
Concerning the above answer, masturbation is not a "bad road", it is something that happens. While seven is young, kids today are exposed to much more than those of us a "little older" were at that age.
To the person asking the question - don't equate him being so young to him possibly having a problem, turning into some freak, and needing help in later life. He just found out that there was more to the "little man" than using the restroom earlier than most. I guess you could look at it as him being more advanced than those of the same age. Not a big deal.

With the media and internet these days, and what kids discuss and hear, it's not surprising to hear a 7 yr old is masturbating and it's harmless....many start much younger.

Masturbation is a bad road that I, unfortunately have been down. I personally feel that it has clouded and perverted my mind to a point that it cannot be reversed. It's a shame that your son is going down it at such a young age. I really don't have any practical advice.
