My husband and I love to watch the home improvement shows, but are very confused by how they get their materials and labor so inexpensive... How do they do it? We are willing to put in work ourselves, so that is the same or better than the shows... We tried to redo our kitchen, bath, and basement only and got quotes of what people redo a WHOLE house that is crappy for, why??? PLEASE HELP!!! We can't afford to move and need to update our home asap!

Successful flippers have developed very loyal relationships with contractors that enable them to do what they do so well. Unfortunately, us non-flippers have a hard time finding an honest, experienced person to install a ceiling fan. But they are out there. If you run out of patience, contact Lowes or Home Depot for bath and kitchen renovations. Not sure what you might do about the basement, except keep looking for a contractor.

You may want to try hiring a home stager... even if you aren't planning on moving or selling. They will cost much less than a designer or decorator and can write you up a detailed list of what needs to be done to upgrade your home. Then you can do the work yourself. Or you can hire the home stager.

As for getting materials, etc., cheaper, that's easy. Because I use the same stores, refer clients to them and have a commercial account, I get rebates on what I buy. Some home stagers won't pass this rebate on to you, but I do pass it to clients, as the clients are paying me and it just doesn't seem right to get paid by a second person... So my clients refer my services because they know they get thing less expensive...

You can also visit hgtv's website... that might help. Or you can try discount stores.... And take baby steps. If you're not planning on selling or moving soon, that means you don't have to do it all at once.... One room at a time works well...

Good luck.... you can email me if you have other questions about home staging and I'll be happy to answer as I'm on a mission to change the way people live....with home staging!

You gotta do it yourself. That's the way to remodel a part of your house for less than the value it would add to your house. Get a good hammer and some 2x4's. Good luck.

They use local contractors who give the lowest bid. They're skilled at getting people to low-ball (and who want to be on TV).

What they do is "trade" tv advertisement for a much lower bid. Otherwise it is almost impossible to do what they do for how much they do it for. Otherwise, everyone would be "flippers"!
