I have seen yahoo pricing of cars, but it seems to me that the dealership always are at least $1,000.00 more than the price shown on yahoo autos WHY? are the dealers just greedy or is yahoo understating the price? just wondered.

You probably want to negotiate the price down a couple of thousands anyway, so if they start high, they will get a better price.

Dealers are not greedy. They just want the highest price that you are willing to pay, just as you want to pay as little as you can get away with.

They always assume the buyer will come in attempting to negotiate a lower price. You too would start higher if you had to run a business in this manner.
Note that Saturn has fixed pricing and you still hear complaints that their prices are too high.

Check website like edmunds.com or kbb.com for dealer cost. Most cars can be sold for dealer cost unless it's a premium car like a corvette or cadillac escalade- that's their bread & butter. They usually get you on the trade-in, extended warranty, and financing !!! Wait for a bitter cold snowy day when the salespeople are hungry.

You've got to know how to negotiate with the dealer.

Too vague. Which new cars? Mercedes, or Yugo?

Part of your confusion may be the addition of title, delivery, taxes, etc.
