For the same reason they associate Santa Claus with Christmas. the 2 just go together. Actually because people are waiting up late to watch the stupid ball drop. Late at night, what is open? Bars
Also, it's another thing to celebrate. People all over celebrate things by drinking alcohol. Mainly champagne

Actually, I think more and more people these days are concentrating on "alcohol free" celebrations or so it seems to me. There will always be someone out there that will need "an excuse" or "reasons" to drink.

It should really be just a toast at midnight to celebrate the incoming new year but people get carried away. It's like anything else that people celebrate really. At weddings people toast to the Bride and Groom. My ex-husband and I went out drinking to celebrate our divorce but we did more than toast. Seven Long Island Ice Teas later he had to drive me home. I was really happy!

Great question.....I'm not sure, but I am anxious to see the answers. My husband and I who don't drink felt very out of place at a party last night due to the heavy drinking. Next year we will have different plans.

Many people think that "having fun" makes it necessary to drink alcohol or take in drugs. It is absurd, but unfortunately true. This culture causes the people who are making and selling the stuff rich, so they resist to death anyone who tries to campaign against this sinful and twisted culture.

Because adults don't have many ways of having fun and alcohol is one of the most potent recreational "drugs" that is legal. Also, our lives suck and it feels good to have something in your system that forces you to laugh and say things to assholes on new years that you wouldn't normally say any other day. My last good answer is that we don't get any presents on this holiday but it is supposed to be a big deal anyway.
