I've tried FF 2, Opera 9, and IE 7. IE 7 and Opera are a little laggy when switching between tabs. Opera also slows down if you minimize it and do other things on your computer for a while then go back to it, because it releases a lot of its memory and has to page it back in. Other than a couple of speed issues, Opera is a very solid and well-designed browser. It does a lot of things 'out-of-the-box', so to speak, that Firefox requires hunting for extensions for.
I haven't used the new Netscape browser, so I don't know how that performs.

Yeah, Opera is fairly good but Firefox is better I use to be a MS Explorer snob :\ then I gave in to Firefox and was amazed, I had Opera for quite some time but it messed a lot of my programs up. :0
it's not really that good. At first I thought it was kick ***, but nope it actually stunk really bad.
Anyways, give Firefox a go or keep Opera - MS Explorer sucks either way. Most Microsoft programs do.

Honestly, I've used Opera and I can't really notice a speed difference. I can't say that it is faster than explorer or netscape. To me, they all run about the same. I think it has more to do with how fast your computer, and your internet connection is

There is no such difference in Browsers. The speed that you download web content is entirely dependant on your internet connection, which program you run makes no difference. (Although, ofcourse, a 486 will run a 10 year old version of Netscape or text-based broswer like Lynx far better than IE7...but that has to do with memory and processor speeds, not browsers. Also, if you have a bunch of adware and dynamic toolbars hijacking your ie, your computer will also ofcourse run slower.)
People use different browsers based on preference...whether you prefer the tabbing in one, or another feature in another browser.

Depending on your hardware, operating sytem and which web page you visit, it varies which is the fastest browser.
Opera is optimzed for Windows and is the best alternative IMHO. It became my main browser with version 8.54 (replacing Firefox) and I have not looked back since. I find it faster in handling scripts compared to other browsers, the mouse gestures are incredibly addictive and the ability to handle 100+ tabs is very cool.
Please see links below for speed comparisons.
Have fun!
