After they wake up, take them out asap (also after they eat). Praise them like crazy. Also, crate train them. When you're not playing with them, crate them. They'll cry when they have to go. Take him/her out and then praise him/her like crazy again. Shouldn't take long (depending on the dog). I hear that dogs like labs are very easy to train. My pugs were easy to train, too. Enjoy your pup!

Put a body harness on your dog and a 5-6 foot long leash. Whenever the dog is inside and not crated than tie the leash to your belt..so you will be constantly seeing the dog. When you see it start to search/circle/signal otherwise that it needs to go, walk the dog immediately outside to an appriopaite potty area. Make sure you use your chosen command word, give plenty of praise and treat when completed (make sure you have treats in your pocket, don't delay with rewarding the dog). Do this until your dog is consistently trying to drag you to the door to show you that it neds to go outside. Remember when training a puppy the average hold time of it's bladder/bowel is about one hour for each month of life til it's about 8 months or so..so keep track of the clock, and water/food intake especially before bedtime.
Make sure you clean any accidents inside the house, this means not just getting rid of the visible stains but of the enzymes..use a good cleaner rated for cleaning biological stains and odors... I use Orange TKO (it's great for anything in the house [laundry, bedding, general cleaning] and safe for pets) or Nature's Miracle...make sure you buy the dog formula.

I just got a puppy and I am crate training her. I got her last Friday and she has only used the bathroom in the house once and that was when I first got her home. I crate her at night and when she has to go she lets me know. So far so good...

Crate training worked great for my dog when nothing else would just be sure to let the puppy out often to use the bathroom or it may backfire on ya.

Put down newspaper or some wee-wee pad (you can get at the pet store) on the spot where the dog leaves his "stuff" first. After a while, the dog will eventually keep coming to the same place because his/her scent remains there. You'll soon realize the dog comes to the same spot all the time so you can keep putting newspaper and the dog will keep coming. It worked for my sister's puppy. Now it's a full-grown chihuahua and he knows exactly where to go when he needs to do his business.

Buy a crate. get one that fits them in their adult size. Let them sleep in the crate and when you're not home keep it in the crate. then when you come home let it outside immediately. when it's doing it's stuff say "go potty!" and when it's done praise it lots and maybe play with it a little to reward it. keep doing this (even when it is trained) and your problem should be solved in a few weeks

Crate train it. Keep the pup in the crate when you are sleeping, not home or cannot supervise it. Take it outside as soon as you take it out of the crate.

Crate training works well, they will not go to the bathroom were they sleep, and taking him outside very often.
