DO NOT GO ON ANY SORT OF DIET! There is only one way to lose weight and keep it off.
1. Stay away from high fat, high sugar foods and alcohol
2. Take at least 30 minutes exercise a day.
You do not have to starve, but you do need to eat healthier. Try using skimmed milk in tea and coffee (I promise, after two weeks you'll never be able to drink it with anything other than skimmed).
Limit yourself to a glass of red wine a day - no beer, no spirits.
Junk food, sweets, biscuits, patries are right out.
For exercise, take a 30 minute brisk walk every other morning. On the other days, try an exercise video.
You will start noticing results within a week and you will drop a dress size in two weeks. The best thing about losing weight this way is that you actually change the way you live and never put the weight back on.

Sorry to be blunt but at your weight and age, talk to your doctor before doing anything!
But as for the charity bit, just pick one, then get everyone you know to sponsor you per pound (not just a set amount because thats no incentive). If you feel you're slacking, let the charity know.....you knowing they're relying on you is more incentive.
Sorry, that first bit sounded a bit cruel, but I'm in my 30's and lost 8 stone, but it was with the doctors help, because sudden weight loss can have a serious physical affect. I wish I'd thought of the charity bit though

Write to the charity of your choice and ask for letters of authority to raise money on their behalf.
They will then provide you with sponsor forms and you ask as many people as possible to sponsor you. Most people will sponsor s fixed amount, but some may offer so much per stone etc. Please stress to your sponsors that they need to put their own, full home address and tick the taxpayer box giving the charity permission to collect Gift Aid. This gives the charity 28% more in reclaimed tax on every £1 donated.
When you have completed your slim, let the charity know and start collecting in your sponsorship, then send it the charity. They will send you an acknowledgement to show your sponsors that they have received it.

What a brilliant incentive, I've started yet another New Year healthy eating thing, I might just follow your lead and talk to a local charity to help others whilst mainly helping myself. Thank You for that, i only found this yahoo answers yesterday, i am finding it very interesting & comical at times, I lost 6 stone 6 years ago and its crept back on....
I need that something extra to get my determination in full swing.
Thanks Again

Good for you. Start doing walking. Run for life is great they send you the dates for the even, and an exercise regime for preparation and you don't have to actually run. Try and get a friend to do it with you.
