Follow jesus's exhortation. Sell everyhting you own and help the poor. Treat the lowest among you as you would treat him. Then when you get to heaven you will be fine.

What I do is invite God around for drinks and nibbles ( God just adores the candies skittles!!! ) and we chit chat about all sorts of the more neutral things. I don't like to put People on the spot and God is certainly not an acceptation so I avoid peppering God with a bunch of why and where stuff. It keeps things light and that way God always enjoys coming back. Give it a try sometime, God's always looking for a little hang time with Mortals, Angels can be a bit pretentious ( Always with the Holy Roly crap, worst than Christians!!! ) and Demons are just a big pain in the azz for The One!

The best way to develop a relationship with God is to first, get to know him, his name, his personality, his purpose and how he deals with us as humans. You must remember however, that to maintain a relationship with him is an ongoing process, and it takes constant effort on our part. Its just like a new friend you've met and want to know everything about that friend, the more you know the closer you become.
If you really appreciate what you are learning about God and the love he has shown for us, we will have a strong desire to express ourselves to him in prayer.
A right heart attitude is essential. In our heart we must exercise faith in God as the “Hearer of prayer” and “the rewarder of those earnestly seeking him.” (Psalm 65:2; Hebrews 11:6) .
Psalms 143 its a comforting pray of David to God and you can make it your own. So start by praying to him, ask him to show you the way towards a better relationship with him and without a doubt he will hear your earnest pray and answer you.

Exegesis, study something you find strange about a passage of scripture. Pull the meaning out. Or think of a question you've always wanted to ask God and begin research. Like I've always wanted to know what did Jesus mean when He said to his disciples " love each other just as I have loved you". For some reason I think there is no simple answer here.
How did Jesus love his disciples?
The word of God is the main ingredient to a relationship with Jesus.

To many, that seems just impossible. Some fear that he is too remote; others feel hopelessly unworthy. However, the Bible lovingly urges us: “Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you.” (James 4:8.) He even assures his worshipers: “I, Jehovah your God, am grasping your right hand, the One saying to you, ‘Do not be afraid. I myself will help you.’”—Isaiah 41:13.
How can we reach out for such a close relationship with God? In any friendship we forge, the bond is based on knowing the person, admiring and valuing his distinctive traits. So God’s qualities and ways, as revealed in the Bible, are a vital field of study. Pondering the way Jehovah manifests each of his qualities, seeing how Jesus Christ perfectly reflected them, and understanding how we too may cultivate them will draw us closer to God. We will see that Jehovah is the rightful and ideal Sovereign of the universe. What is more, he is the Father we all need. Strong, just, wise, and loving, he never abandons his faithful children.
If you would like further information on how to further develop your relationship with Jehovah and forge a bond with him that will never be broken, so that you may live to praise him forever:
Please contact Jehovah's Witnesses at the local Kingdom Hall. They offer a beautiful publication, entitled "Draw Close to Jehovah."

1) Obey Him more and more.
2) Spend time with Him in prayer.
3) Go out and LOVE your neighbor through your actions.
Have you considered that perhaps you are not in the right denomination? Perhaps where you go to church is not really the true church that God wants you to go to.

G-d responds to obediance and repentance the most I have found. Cut out something you know is wrong. Seek repentance. Pray for the Holy Spirit and revelation,

Join the whole human race, be kind and except all people like family, clean your body with fruits & vegetables, study nature and all things God created. I did this and now I know He's real.

Your relationship is increase when you do something in His name. You can't sit around and expect something to fall out of the sky. If you do for others you will experience a deeper love for God.

I was the same way for a while and the best answer I can give you is to sit down each day at a quiet time and just talk to Him. Seriously just talk to him and pray and the more you do it the more he will come in your heart
