2 weeks ago we adopted a two year old collie from a rescue home. He's a lovely lively chap, but he seems to have it in for our cat and chases her at every opportunity. We felt confident that they'd sort out their differences, but it doesn't seem to be happening. The cat loves dogs (has lived with them all her life), but she can't stand our new boy, although she stands her ground as best she can. Can anyone help!

i have 2 dogs and 2 cats, they are not friends but the dogs put up with the cats and visa versa, your dog wont hate the cat it will just not like it very much at the moment,it a few more weeks im sure they will get on much better and once the dog has had a few sharp swipes from the cat they will have a lot of respect for each other, take your time and im sure you'll have such a laugh watching them together.

it is early days yet. You need to make sure the collie cannot hurt the cat. Perhaps buy a large dog cage so he can see but not chase her. Tell him no whenever he tries to chase her and let him sleep on some of her bedding. Stick with it and you will see a change. It takes rescue dogs up to 2 months to feel part of the family and once he feels secure, he will ignore the cat. I do rescue and often have to train new dogs into not chasing my cats.
Madam Peggy Suey helps as she is an older cat and is just not afraid of any dog. She will not run, just sits and ignores them until they get to annoying to her, then she simply swipes them. My new 8 months old collie learned within a week not to chase my cats. Collies are highly intelligent and respond well to a firm "NO" or "leave it" said loudly in a gruff voice.

Best bet is to keep them apart. Make sure they can still smell each other. The dog has to allow the cat into the "pack". Sometimes it can be uneasy when the dog is a little older. Give them some more time and make sure you let the dog know that going after the cat is a bad thing.

Thanks for all of your advise. I think I will just have to give it time. We got the cat around 11 years ago and brought her into a house with two collie crosses (our previous rescue dogs - now both sadly dead, but both lived to fantastic ages). It didn't take long for her to be accepted by them, but our new collie seems to be taking a bit longer to settle. I think there are other, underlying issues regarding his behaviour as he is very difficult to control when he is distracted, although wonderfully behaved in most situations. I'm beginning to think that he might have ideas above his station in the "scheme of things" and I think he needs to learn a bit about his place in the pack. I think that dog training classes might settle him down so I'm going to start as soon as poss.
Thanks again for all your help!

dont worry that is completly natural that the dog hates the cat and chases it , my dog chases my cat round all the time and my cat gos to scratch him and he runs away ! You should leave them in a room together for an hour or 2 and see what happens. But dont even consider getting rid of your cat because youve had it longer than the dog if you're going to get rid of anything get rid of the dog ok ! Good luck

Collies are herding dogs which means he will chase about anything that runs. Don't leave it to them to sort it out cause it won't happen. try reintroducing them by putting the dog in a crate and letting the cat check him out and then reverse it keep them separate unless you are supervising them. Clicker training also works well with collies.
