Windows XP and Windows 2000 are both really good choices for upgrading from Win98/SE. Both operating systems are built on Microsoft's stable NT core and both OS's will be very reliable. If your looking for a good operating system that will do well for business tasks, Windows 2000 might be the right upgrade for ya. Windows 2000 has a vast array of networking features and is often used by large organizations like schools, businesses, and libraries where large numbers of computers are connected together. However, if you're looking for an operating system rich with multimedia features and hardware support, Windows XP is the way to go. Windows XP has many of the same features as Windows 2000 does but XP takes things a step further by provinding the best support for all of today's goodies (MP3 players, digital cameras, flash drives, cd-burners, etc.) Windows XP also has a redisinged look to be more user friendly. Both operating systems aren't too bad for price. For the greatest deals, I'd check online retailers and auction sites for the OSes. Windows 2000 would probably be cheaper because it's a little bit older than Windows XP. If it's Windows XP you want, Home Edition is by far the cheapest version and works great if you have a home computer (something you use for today's basics like emailing, web browsing, playing games, listening to music, etc.) Windows XP Professional is more for business purposes but works just the same but it's more expensive. The great news is, Microsoft is releasing a new operating system, Windows Vista. This will drive the cost for Windows XP down meaning you'll probably be able to save even more money on that OS. Ebay or Amazon.com are good places to find Windows 2000 or XP at great prices.

I doubt that you can buy a WN2000 installation program.
So guess that leaves us with an XP upgrade. I believe XP
has 3 different programs and each needs different System
Requirements. You need to print out your present OS and see
what you have BEFORE even considering an upgrade. I doubt that an XP will work on a 98.
Just to buy an XP installation CD and try to install a clean program is impossible. It will try to overwrite the 98 and you will
have two OS trying to work at the same time.

Its best to find out what you need for whatever series of
XP you want. Always use a lot more power than Windows
recommends because they say it can run on X requirements.
That may be so, but it won't work GOOD.

Its time to give that entire system to some nice kid and
go out and buy what you really need. You must be very
careful what and where you buy. It's like buying a used car
and you need guarantees in writing. Rebates are a joke...
Also salesmen tend to exaggerate what's in the box.
Its a jungle out there and you'd better take someone along
who knows computers.

There's tons of web info on what/where/why of XP. Do some
searching. Wikipedia/PCWorld/SAF/Bob Rankin/Leo's
Newsletter, etc. Anyone else know who can help her?

If you really want to do this, you would need to backup your info. from Windows 98, format the HDD, and do a clean install of W2K, not an upgrade path, because it can keep a lot of old problems intact.

Windows 2000, is a client operating system geared towards the business professional. For a home OS, you should go with Windows XP Home Edition. Or stick with 98.

Honestly, you'd do better to just get a new computer.

Older versions of the Windows OS actually DEGRADE over time, and even an upgrade will not fix all the flaws - they'll carry over. You could do a full install of the new version, as in, wipe the hard drive vice an upgrade, but that gets so expensive (not to mention it's a pain in the patoot), you'd be better off just buying a new system and get decent hardware while you are at it.

Or, you could wait until the new MS Vista OS is out . . .

Buy the cd, however I would run a compability check before doing the upgrade. Going from 98 to 2000 or xp could cause compability issues.

Buy the CD and the license for Windows 200 or XP. The cheapest place would probably be on the internet. Try amazon.

www.amazon.co.uk ( if in the UK)
or www.amazon.com ( in the US)

Amazon is a reliable online store.

the college at which I worked had Pentium III's with XP up till 2 years in the past, and that they ran merely high quality. If reminiscence finally ends up being a undertaking, you could continually upload extra reminiscence for no longer too plenty money. BTW - our Pentium III's had in uncomplicated terms 8 - 10 Gig stressful drives, little or no RAM and have been networked. We had extra matters with the shortcoming of stressful rigidity area. because of the fact the networking application took up approximately 5 Gigs of stressful rigidity area, it left us with next to no digital reminiscence. That did instruct to sluggish issues down notably.
