I am currently running windows 98 se....i bought the computer three years ago and actually asked for 98 se just because that is what i was familar with.
I need to upgrade as all the gadgets the kids got for christmas 98 is too old...
a friend has offered to burn his windows 2000 cd for me but i dont know if it would work or not.

this totally illegal, you can buy an original CD for win 2000 with a valid key, but be sure that your pc hardware can afford that operating system

i think microsoft would frown upon that. windows ME and windows 2000 are not that great. they were rushed into production and ended up making a mess of everyone's computers. i'd upgrade to windows XP. if your computer has atleast a 500mhz processor in it, windows xp should work on your pc. if you are good with computers I'd look into using linux. ubuntu linux to be exact. its completely and legally free and can do most things xp can do. I guess though it depends on what gadgets your kids got for christmas and how much time you have to get used to using a new operating system

Your friend's Windows 2000 will have a key code number that is registered to his computer, and will not work on yours. I tried that a few weeks ago, and the friend's computer would not accept it.

You can take a burned vista copy and put it in your machine and install it, but if you dont have a product key it does you no good. Microsoft will give you 30 days to register and if you dont then it will put a lock down on your system..
