Silica crystals can be toxic if eaten.

Clumping litters are harmful to kittens and some cats, as if it is inhaled, or if they get it in thier anus, it can clog those areas. Kittens have been known to die from clumping litters.

The only experience I have with this is that a particular cat might have an allergic reaction to a specific kind of litter. My kit is one of those. But I basically just have to avoid "cheap" litters (I actually saw one that was in a plain white bag labeled "cat litter" in black letters. Nothing else). If you're afraid of allergies or reactions in your cat, I reccomend Yesterday's News, a litter made by Purina (I think). It is made of recycled newspaper pellets that are better for the environment than most litters, and its easier on the kitty. My vet reccomended it to me.The one downside is that you'll have to change it a bit more often since it doesn't mask odors the way a lot of scented litters do. Its also non-clumping, so that might add a little bit to your troubles. But your kitty will thank you for it!

Most pet stores carry it, but I put the Petco website for it up so that you could at least see what the package looks like.

None of the cats I have had liked any of the scented cat litter. They would not use it. They all preferred the natural gravel types of Kitty Litter. But they were indoor/outdoor cats also. That might have made a difference. Because the natural gravel types is more like the ground..

I have 4 cats and the I've tried lots of kinds of litter and the only one I've found that keeps the oder to a minimum is Fresh Step. I've tried the expensive ones and the cheap ones but Fresh Step works the best. It is a scoopable litter.

None of my cats have suffered in any way using this product.

I have 3 cats and I used sand and lay a layer of baking soda over the sand. It neutralizes the ammonia order from the pet feces.
Read up on uses for baking soda on the web.
