The best solution is prevention, combing your cat as often as possible. Most cats enjoy this time with their owner. Home remedies to try though remember to always consult your vet; the call and advice/suggestion is usually free.
*small amount of butter (about 1/2 teaspoon) two or three times a week.
*a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (non-flavored) or baby food squash.
*flax seed oil to the diet

A good remedy for hairballs is the Purina Hairball Remedy for Adult Cats. It is a bag of kitty treats that actually cures the cat of the hairball. You can get the Purina Hairball Remedy in the Pet section at Wal-Mart. It isn't that expensive. It only costs two or three dollars. The cat will also enjoy this formula a lot more than it will enjoy swallowing vasoline!

HI
It could be hairballs, have you seen your cat vomit up a hairball or seen hair in its poos?
You can trying giving parafin oil in your cats food as this can aid in moving hairballs through the intestines. Catlax which u can get from a vet is only around $16 maybe your parents could buy some. Another cause of hacking in cats is asthma, just like humans and it can be treated by a vet

Most long haired cats have hairballs from time to time. It is normal. As soon as your cat hacks up the stuff it will stop hacking. There isn't anything you can do at this point, your cat has to get it out. Then you can buy hairball formula food or drops to help your kitty digest things better in the future.

Well the only thing that could fix that is something over the counter at a pet store, or going to the vet, and considering how expensive the vet is, I think you might want to take a look at the over the counter products, I can't remember the name of it, but there was one product that worked wonders on our 2 cats that have now passed away, It was a tube of molasses type consistency, and whenever we gave it to them when they had hairballs, within a couple hours they were back to complete normal. by the way they were kittens when we gave them this stuff, it was years ago, and they lived a full and healthy life.

The margarine will not hurt her. You can get pounce hairball remedy for her. This is what I use for my 10 cats. I do however think the margarine will help her. Give her a big kiss from me.

If she has been hacking and coughing for 3 weeks it isn't a hairball! She may have a respiratory infection so you need to get her to a vet tomorrow at the latest. Good Luck!

Try a small amount of vegetable oil on her food. This may help, but the hairball treats or science diet hairball remedy food would be best.

never heard of a hairball hanging around for that length of time..A cat was born with the natural ability to hack them up..it's part of being a cat.Sounds like you need to go to a vet.
