You can refinish your own cabinets if you have time and some basic handy skills. One option is simply painting what you have. That comes out nice. If they're wood now, just scuff them up or use a deglosser and use a high adhesion primer and a special paint for the job (like Cabinet Coat). Go to a PAINT STORE (not Home Depot or Lowes) and they will give you the proper tools and paints.

You can also remove the doors you have if they aren't that nice and you have a little bit of money. Many companies make custom doors, which sounds expensive, but is not. You just measure your openings and they send you the sizes you need in any wood and finish you choose. Doors usually seem to run about $75-$100 each depending on the size and finish. A nice look is to paint the cabinet boxes a dark color and get wood doors. Black boxes with cherry doors is gorgeous. If you are a little more handy, you can buy the veneer that covers the cabinet boxes themselves and then the boxes and doors will match.

It's fine to get the doors through Home Depot (they offer a brand called Quality Doors, I think) but you can also get them through a multitude of websites. Just type cabinet doors into a search engine.

This is not something that is worth paying a contractor for. You can do a beautiful job whether you paint or reface the cabinets and your kitchen will look like a million bucks!

Use or find stainless steel sheets recyclable of course and polish them up and use them to reface the cupboards. you can glue or have a sheet metal worker have them bend round/bevel the edges to make a fitting easier.

Train sleepers are good aswell they are hard wood and with the correct saw ya can slice a few good slaps of wood to reface anything. Also gives a nice smell and a rustic look.
