from my experience both ways work when you play the ball center with hands slightly ahead it promotes a lower piercing ball flight that goes good distance. If you choose to play the ball of the front foot you will pick the ball clean it will go higher and sometimes farther the answer is most definitely both. You need both shots on tight lies you need to hit down through it on fluffy fairways or the light rough when the ball is sitting up play it forward and pick it clean. In fact you need both of those shots on just about all of the clubs except Strong three Woods or drivers.

Take your stance without a ball, mark the center of the stance, swing your hybrid and watch where it brushes the turf, then position the ball about 1 inch ahead of the start of the brush.

Allthough if you decided to work the ball in a particular fashion you would have to change the position anyway. So it really would boil down to the type of shot you intended to hit.

Place the ball just a little less left than where you are playing your 3 wood.

use your hybrid like you would a 3 wood. not as far on your left foot as your driver, but close.

place both feet @ the ball, with your right foot, take one step to the right. with your left, take a half of a step the the left. do this if you are a right, opposite if you are a lefty.
