Basically, National Airlines was bankrupt. They were in court receivership and Pan Am bought them. Who knows what would have happened if Lorenzo had bought them? He had a way to buy airlines and sell off their assets.

Pan Am is gone, too. Will US Airlines be the sole surviving airline in the country?

really the only reason Pan AM bought national is so they could
have local domestic flying rights
(remember at that time Pan AM wasnt allow to fly domestically
(only internationally)

(other then some Lax- HNL. NYC flights
so they bought National, then came deregulation
which meant had Pan AM waited, they would have been to file
for domestic rights with the Dept of Transportation..
